What Is Social Media Marketing?

Social media marketing is a process of attracting traffic through social media platforms.

Social Media is a catch-all term for sites that provide different social actions. For example, Twitter is a social platform designed to let people share quick messages or “updates”. Facebook, on the other hand, is a complete social networking platform that allows various activities, from sharing updates, and photos, to joining events to broadcasting a live program and a variety of other activities. Social Media Marketing nowadays contributes a major chunk of website traffic.

Why would a search marketer — or a search engine — show interest in social media? Because these two are very closely related.

Social media feeds into the discovery of new content or stories or news, and in the world of search engines “discovery” is a search activity. Social Media also helps to build links that also contribute to SEO results. Many people also do searching at social media platforms to find any particular content. Social connections sometimes also impact the relevancy of search results, either within the social network or at a ‘regular’ search engine.
